Another key component of helping to maintain your pet’s health and happiness is having them on reliable, consistent heartworm preventative.
Heartworm disease is serious and potentially fatal to our dogs and cats. Heartworms are spread by mosquito bites and can grow up to a foot long, living in the heart and lungs of our beloved pets.
Unless you intend to breed, we recommend having pets spayed or neutered. Pets that have been spayed or neutered tend to live longer and have healthier lives.
Regular wellness exams allow us to catch underlying health problems early, provide consistent preventative care, and support your pet’s overall health and well-being.
It's hard to provide care without knowing the root of what is ailing your pet, which is why diagnostic testing is so important. Diagnostic testing can include laboratory testing (blood, urine, and fecal) and diagnostic imaging like X–rays, CT, MRI, and ultrasound.
From routine cleanings to tooth extractions, the Thrive Pet Healthcare network of Primary Care veterinarians and Dental Specialists is here to keep your pet's smile fresh! Our general practices can take care of everyday dental maintenance with outstanding regular check-ins, cleanings, and basic surgeries.
Meanwhile, our specialty veterinarians are prepared to handle more complex or chronic dental cases like a root abscess, jaw fracture, abnormal tooth formation, or advanced periodontal disease. These doctors are highly trained within the field of veterinary dentistry and have access to specialized equipment, typically unavailable at primary care clinics.
Our veterinarians are skilled in diagnosing common problems that affect our pets like vomiting, itching, lumps, limping, and more.
Vaccines are essential for preventive care and can increase the chances of a longer, happier life for pets. Ensuring that pets are consistently up to date with their vaccinations can help prevent contracting disease or help lessen the severity of symptoms if a disease is contracted.
Fleas can cause itchy skin, skin infections, and spread tapeworms. Ticks can carry disease such as Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis, and more.
We will be by your side during this time of need to offer both medical assistance and emotional support.
The occasional taps, scrapes, and scratches that happen when playing with your pet means it's time for a trip to your local veterinarian or boarding facility! Trimming your pet's nails is a healthy part of their life, and can lead to greater comfort in everyday activity.
Let's face it - the life of a pet can be pretty dirty. Playing in things and making a mess, self-grooming, and all the little things that our pets enjoy every day doesn't always make for a great smelling companion. That's why our Thrive Pet Care partner clinics offer bathing services to get your pet sweet smelling and sparkly clean!
Bathing specialists at Thrive Pet Care partner clinics know what it means to give a scared pet a bath too, as they're trained and prepared in keeping your pet calm, even when they don't like being clean. When your pet comes back out, you'll be glad they got a bath - and they will be too!

Dr. Allen joined our team in 2012 after graduating from the veterinary program at Washington State University in Pullman, WA. Go Cougs! She decided to pursue a career in veterinary medicine after riding along with a large animal ambulatory veterinarian and realizing that she could combine her love for animals and interest in science/medicine into a successful career. While in college, she worked as a veterinary technician with both small and large animals. She earned her Bachelors degree in Animal Science from California Polytechnic State University in beautiful San Luis Obispo, CA. Her specific interests include ophthalmology and cardiology, but she also enjoys working with large animals whenever possible. Being a San Diego native, she enjoys any activity that involves being out in the sunshine including hiking, boating, gardening, and riding her paint horse Twistie.

Dr. Karlberg decided to become a veterinarian as a young girl; she even wrote her 6th grade career report on becoming an animal doctor! She received her Bachelor of Science Degrees in Biological Sciences and Animal Sciences from California Polytechnic in San Luis Obispo. She then did her doctorate work at Iowa State University, graduating with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. She moved to San Diego and worked for ABC Veterinary Hospitals for 8 years before purchasing the El Cajon location in 2004. She changed the hospital name and has owned Care & Comfort Veterinary Hospital ever since. She is married to her husband, Steve Brentnall, and has two beautiful and active children, Piper and Finn. Two cats, a turtle, and salt water fish currently finish her family. Dr. Karlberg loves to read, camp, fly fish, travel, ride horses and spend time with her family.

Growing up in a farming family, Dr. Bowman knew at an early age she wanted to be a veterinarian. At four years of age while watching cattle being worked, she announced that she would do that when she grew up! That dream became her reality after graduating from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Bowman started her career in the Midwest, but the allure of nice weather drew her to sunny California. Although she enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine, she is especially interested in internal medicine, feline medicine, and geriatric medicine.
When she is not working, she enjoys hiking, stargazing, and snorkeling.
